Born on November 14, 1992, in Bamako, Mali, Jean Baptiste Kamaté, multi-instrumentalist also known as JB.K, is the sole musician in his family. Developing a passion for music from a young age, he began playing the drums secretly during primary school at the age of 12, concealing his musical pursuits from his family.
Two years later, he expanded his musical horizons by learning both the guitar and piano simultaneously. In 2012, he successfully passed the entrance exam for the National Institute of Arts of Bamako, specializing in music. During his second year at the institute in 2013, he became a guitar instructor for a program sponsored by a Swiss NGO in Bamako.
Throughout his musical journey, Jean Baptiste Kamaté has been involved in various bands, serving as a drummer, pianist for the school orchestra, and later transitioning to the role of bass player for the Bb Major Orchestra around 2017.
In 2023, he met Yamirah Gercke in Bamako as she was borrowing a guitar from him. This encounter led to the recording of his original compositions, including tracks such as "Masakè" and "I ka na Djoro," with Yamirah producing the songs. Their collaboration also resulted in a third track titled "Badji," primarily composed by Yamirah. The titles and language were specifically chosen to uplift Malian people by avoiding the use of French, the colonial language, and instead embracing Bambara, a language native to Mali. The Songs will come out soon.
As an artistic and cultural entrepreneur, Jean Baptiste Kamaté founded his own music center and established the company Dofini ACS. Through these ventures, his goal is to facilitate learning in the realm of art and culture, with a particular emphasis on music, for both young children and adults who share his passion for the arts.
His overarching aim is to contribute to the growth and development of the arts and culture industry, both within Mali and on a global scale.
